It is a very tragic practice of parents to abandon their child/children in their youth; poor, helpless and defenseless. Well, that’s why authorities sometimes call these kinds of parents psychologically incapacitated. They relinquish claim and interest over their children with a decision of never coming back again to assume their responsibilities in the upbringing of their children.
Abandonment is caused by many social and cultural factors. Here, let’s enumerate some common reasons why children are abandoned.
- Poverty- This is the most common cause why parents resort to abandoning their offspring. They strive within a poor social environment and are not financially stable to support their families.
- Political state in their respective countries- There are countries with such difficulties in adoption processes, so parents would rather abandon their children instead of putting their efforts for their children to be adopted.
- Lack of orphanages- When there is no place or institution to accept children whom their parents have no capacity to support.
- Mental illness- An illness affecting the mental activities and behavior somewhat dismisses the parent’s capabilities of raring a child, but that’s involuntary. In some cases a mentally ill parent who does not get the needed medical attention leaves the family and never again seen. It would take a lot of effort to track down a mentally ill runaway.
- Conflicting parents/single parents- As a result of some difficult situations affecting a couple, they part ways. A mother is often left alone with a child to take care of. After finding a new boyfriend who doesn’t appreciate children she would ultimately abandon her child. A true-to-life story similar to this was widely covered by international media in 1987 which took place in Japan. The family involved lived in SUGAMO where the abandonment resulted in malnourishment of the children, assault from undesirable friends, lack of education and the most heart-breaking is death.
How can we help prevent or lessen abandonment cases?
“Children of the Planet Trust” plays an important role. We cannot sit back and relax knowing there are thousands of children who are subjects of abandonment. The causes mentioned above are only a few but there are more reasons why parents abandon their children.
That is why this Trust was founded; to reach out to those children and give them a brighter life ahead. Help them rise up from the perils of life they did not choose to be in. If they were allowed to choose a path, they would not be where they are now. It would definitely be where they can go to school, eat healthy food, get some descent clothes, have at least a small shelter, and have a family to belong and a community to develop social consciousness.
We people can enjoy life to the fullest and at the same time share our love with children who suffer around the world. There are many generous sponsors and donors who make life easier for those children. You can read about them all over the internet, and learn how they made a difference in the life of displaced children and how their lives changed through sharing their blessings.
Most of them found their way donating to charity like us to extend help. Some kind and open hearted people sponsored one particular child or children until they are adult ready to stand alone. And there are so many cases that sponsored children have grown to be successful. They will live to tell stories how grateful they are to those who have helped them carry on their dreams when there was no one for them to turn to.
These people are the ones who made them whole again and served a good example for them. Don’t you wish you are one of them?
